The Roller Coaster Ride That is David Stebbins

David Stebbins is a comedy veteran who has incredible energy that takes over any room he performs at. He leaves it all on stage, and every performance is like a roller coaster ride and not for the faint of heart. This Saturday, we'll have David on our stage. We had a chance to catch up with him and learn a little bit about him (maybe a little too much).

We've noticed you typically have very high energy performances. How do you maintain all that energy?

False enthusiasm that morphs into authentic enthusiasm. I always start out not wanting to perform, but when I'm up there and lock into a great set or bad set, an authenticity emerges. Of course, I prefer to have great sets. But I don't mind tanking and ruining 200 people's night or looking like a moron. There's a freedom in not caring so much. In regard to the energy, I've always been a bit of a spaz. Plus, my mother abused me.

You have worked with some of the most influential comics of all time including Chris Rock and George Carlin. Who has been the most influential in your career and why?

There wasn't one comic that inlfuenced me the most. I started out obsessed with wacky comedy shows as a kid - Carol Burnett, The Benny Hill Show, Sanford and Son, The Jeffersons. But then I accidentally discovered stand-up comedy - Richard Pryor, Rodney Dangerfield, George Carlin. That led to learning about this strange world of stand up comedy. But if I really had to pick one comic who really influenced me the most ,it would be you, Dominic. You're the next guy paying me so that really influences me.

Do you enjoy writing or performing best?

Neither, but I'm driven to do both. I've dropped out of both artistic mediums numerous times and it always leads me back to the same place. I find myself doing them again. I think it's part of a broader personality disorder.

We like to tackle the hard topics in our hard hitting interviews. When you shampo, do you rinse and repeat?

I try not to bathe. I want people to remember me for something and it's often my lingering and disturbing body odor. You hit an age and realize, hey, at least they'll remember me.

What can our audience expect for your upcoming show this Saturday?

Either the funniest show they have ever seen or a man drowning in his own unpreparedness crying for help. It's a coin toss at this point.
